One of Fort Lauderdale's downtown landmark eating and imbibing grounds & certainly one of the most wondrous places to gather among neighbors and world travelers has returned.
The building that once housed Shirttail Charlies was earmarked land waste by the condo frenzy swashbucklers of our recent past. Yet the economic tides of reality have allowed the establishment to continue making history upon these friendly waters.
Word is - pirates have captured the premise and low and behold! They are sharing the treasured grounds. But fear not, hospitality for all is the declaration. Sailors, pirates, lawyers, regular Joe, outlaw types and wannabes are coming together to enjoy a little Piratedise and share the same views.
The pirate invasion was made official when the doors opened to over 2500 patrons on July 18, 2009 to fanfare and intrigue. The adventurer's banners, signs, authentic relics and well-made mannequins adorn throughout the establishment. And to celebrate the completion and unveiling, a large replica pirate ship up the shores from Miami with gun firing friendly reveler pirates. Shirttail Charlie was chased away, yet his once proud fortress is once again prepared to provide delectable consumption alongside the spirit of goodtime Charlie.
The atmosphere unquestionably evokes the storied legacies of the rebel wanderers yet the waterside restaurant and great city skyline sights are still the most venerated and prominent.
In 2005, the Roberto & Claudia Guerios ported in Fort Lauderdale territory intact with their sailing excursion experiences and most markedly, a pirate passion. They soon constructed The Pirate Shop in an alley between the Elbo Room and Dirty Blondes on Fort Lauderdale beach. A year later, the Pirate Bar would sit beside it. Needless to say, both became a very popular land attraction.
When the opportunity was presented to the Guerios' to infuse their long days of laborers to something that Roberto describes as more in line with his ultimate goal - he seized the opportunity to once again bring the north side of the downtown shore back to life. In four months of almost round the clock work, the neglected building was transformed with dining and boat docks, furnishings, a beautiful clipper ship bar constructed on the second level with numerous other notable items throughout.
The Pirate Republic Bar, Seafood & Grill menu is certainly bountiful! Guerios describes the menu as "casual gourmet". Consisting of Caribbean, South American, Mediterranean and American influences. Notable wife Claudia has incorporated specific touches of ingredients and spices with considerably large and varied menu offerings. Says Guerios, "We cook fresh ingredients with a lot of flavor. Original and simply delicious recipes... from the Seven Seas, to your table".
Pirate themed servers promptly greet you, offering a well crafted specialty drink list of age old favorites given pirate lore titles. Hearty servings of seafood, steak, chicken, burgers and pasta dishes in different combinations are throughout the menu with soup, salad and sandwich offerings. Even a Japanese Kobe beef burger makes its way onto the menu. A sure sign the food is good and plentiful is represented with the vast numbers of diners taking portions home.
The menu entrees and item presentation is secondary here. After all, food is not for looking at with pirates - but eating. Ahh... freshness and taste is the real bounty. That is what's keeping the large lunch crowds from the nearby businesses and residents coming back day after day. Attorney Joshua Rydell comments, "I eat lunch here almost every day. It's great." He also makes it back on weekends to enjoy the live music.
The upstairs area provides room for private functions such as wedding rehearsal dinners, corporate events and birthday parties to name a few. The centerpiece in the main area is a clipper ship bar besides the incredible views of the river and city skyline that changes as the sun gravitates and boats of all sizes and beauty traverse the water.
Below on the main deck extend wharfs that situate you along the waterway of the New River. These are the most sought after seats by most customers. Picnic tables and custom made high top tables surround the multilevel that is open aired, outside seating under a large canopy and umbrella tables.
Boaters have lots of dock space and it's free, but it's best to call ahead if you have a large vessel. Also noteworthy is you can take the Water Taxi as the restaurant is a permanent stop. You will find that the parking here is free with plenty of spots along the street and inside the gated marina parking lot. I witnessed numerous neighbors walking to the establishment from the area that is rich in green space. "We're very concentrated on the locals," Guerios voices.
Happy Hour is from Monday - Friday, 4-7 PM and provides 1/2 off well liquor & wine, $1 off beers and $5 appetizers. It is truly a great place to port with the work mates and friends.
The south side of the building is an entry way that hosts poolside parties and music as well. With numerous parties and even weddings on the books, and a patron capacity of approximately 200 upstairs and over 300 below, Fort Lauderdale's Pirate Republic is likely to be one of the busiest places in the territory.
